Note to all present and future indie clothing designers: fabrics other than solid colored cotton jersey do in fact exist. More and more, we're liking small, independent labels that don't necessarily look indie. Take, for example, Sunshine & Shadow.
The label was started by Rhode Island School of Design grad Lily Raskind and presented its first collection in Spring 2005. And it started like lots of indie labels do: with lots of loosely draped jersey dresses and separates:
But 3 collections later, it's clear Ms. Raskind has not let that textile design degree from RISD go to waste. The Fall 2006 collection is the most ambitious yet with its use of bold patterns and prints. And it's apparently working, because all at once we've seen the label in some of our favorite boutiques.
