Doshaburi Doshaburi

By Ara Anjargolian | 15 September 2009, 10:24 AM

That's not a typo. Doshaburi Doshaburi is the second incarnation of Doshaburi, our favorite Spanish avant-garde fashion shop. Doshaburi the sequel is a more sophisticated, minimal take on fashion, with some to die for pieces from avant-garde fashion legends and newcomers alike.

Assembly New York

By Ara Anjargolian | 01 July 2009, 10:51 AM

It was over 4 years ago that we walked into Los Angeles' Scout and were taken with the thoughtful collection of clothing from an international roster of budding fashion talents complemented by expertly curated vintage pieces. A lot has changed in four years. Scout moved to a new location in Hollywood. Jargol moved to New York. And Greg Armas, one of the original owners of Scout moved to New York himself and opened Assembly in mid-2008.

For his new retail effort, Armas has evolved the Scout retail concept. While still having an eye for up and coming fashion talents, Assembly honors the past as much as the future. This is reflected in the ambiance, in the prominently display selection of vintage clothing, accessories and objects, but also in the curation of new clothing and accessories. Surrounded by vintage and antique items that are desirable and relevant decades later, with Assembly there seems to be a predilection towards design and production that will stand the test of time. Shoes in beautiful, heavyweight leathers and canvases are preferred over trendy colorful sneakers. Shirts and dresses with careful construction and subdued colors prevail over more unorthodox treatments. Seasonal trends are mostly ignored.

Face Projects

By Lyndsy Welgos | 02 April 2009, 7:40 AM

Solomon Chase and David Toro’s collaborative effort Face Projects are now available at New High Mart in Los Angeles and online. Face Projects are unisex one-of-a-kind face decorations avant-garde enough to make Alexander McQueen’s bird hats look like last century's avant-garde. These playful pieces are extremely versatile; you can wear one at a time, all together at once, or, as shown on the New High Mart website, share between friends.

Solomon Chase is a New York based designer. David Toro is a New York based visual artist.

Thome Browne at Colette

By Ara Anjargolian | 22 January 2009, 10:02 AM

Quirky yet proper, Thom Browne's work introduces formal menswear to the modern world. It's fitting then to find his work at a shop that introduced avant-garde menswear fashion to streetwear. None other than Paris' Colette will be taking in Browne' for a short time, a store within the store being turned into a European version of Browne's Tribeca atelier. The cohabitation run until February 14th and pieces are also available at Colette's online store.

Komakino

By Ara Anjargolian | 08 December 2008, 8:03 AM

Bigger closets or a leaky roof rank high in reasons we would be compelled to move. Komakino in Vancouver dutifully moves every so often to stay true to its "guerrilla store" concept. Of course, moving a bunch of times is not enough. The shop also carries an astonishingly dead on assortment of men's clothing and accessories. European and Japanese avant-garde standard bearers form the foundation of the shop, while obscure labels just finding their niche add a bit of intrigue and restlessness.

If you can't seek out the physical store, Komakino displays all their inventory online and takes orders via e-mail.

Reborn finally launched their Fall 2008 collections online and selection is, if possible, better than their spring effort. Pieces range from stark minimal to complex sculptural and come in any color you like as long as it is black. Here are some of our favorites.

The V Store

By Ara Anjargolian | 28 October 2008, 8:25 AM

Henrik Vibskov has boutiques in Copenhagen and Oslo and now he has one online. The V Store is now the online face of Vibskov's two Scandinavian boutiques.

While it's certainly nice to have access to a deep selection of Vibskov's own work (though honestly Tres Bien has been doing a fine job of this of late), we're excited to see the work of Walter Van Bierendonck make it online as well. If you know anything about the Belgian designer, Royal Academy of Antwerp instructor, and member of the Antwerp Six, you'll know that Bierondonck has managed to do decades of creative, imaginative work with tongue tucked firmly in cheek. In his relatively short career, Vibskov has proven himself capable of doing just the same. Carrying Bierondonck's clothing in his store is a clear nod to the influence Bierondonck has had on the current generation of boundary pushing designers.

But back to the store. Also on the virtual shelves is an extensive lineup from nascent cosmetics company Uslu Airlines, skincare from Malin and Goetz and more.

Oak Bond Age

By Ara Anjargolian | 09 September 2008, 11:14 AM

Last week, we reported on Oak's "Bond Age" collection set to debut on Monday, September 8th to celebrate fashion week and Oak's relatively new Bond Street location. To recap, Oak worked with some of their favorite designers to create limited edition products around the theme of bondage, available for sale at their Bond Street location as well as online from September 8th to September 11th.

The collection debuted online yesterday, and we have to say: it is one of the most inspired store/brand collaborations we have seen in quite some time. Some designers adapted their well established aesthetic to fit the bondage theme, like say Complex Geometries' jersey binder dress. Other's ventured completely out of their element (don't expect to see anything like Vena Cava's naked print T-shirt to appear in their next collection). But it was all in good fun and succeeded in producing some seriously cool, seriously sexy, and sometimes seriously raunchy designs.

Très Bien's Hosting Henrik Vibskov and Our Legacy Store in Stores

By Ara Anjargolian | 09 September 2008, 10:32 AM

On of the better retail endeavors we've seen in a while is certainly Très Bien's store in store concept. The idea of a store in a store--where a shop will carry most or all of a particular designers collection in a designated area of their space--is nothing new. But a store in store is not often done by a small boutique, nor does it usually happen simultaneously in the physical location and online. Last season, Tres Bien did a store in store with Swedish menswear label Our Legacy. This season they've added Danish fashion wunderkind Henrik Vibskov to the mix. If not in Sweden, you can follow the store in store action for Vibskov and Our Legacy here and here respectively. Meanwhile, we've picked out a few of our favorites so far below:
