Issey Miyake

• Japanese designer Issey Miyake studied fashion at Tama Art University in Tokyo and worked at Laroche, Givenchy, and Geoffrey Beene before he opened the Miyake Design Studio in 1970.
• Miyake began showing his work in 1973 in Paris, then in 1993 developed Pleats Please, an innovated and practical clothing line exhibited at Pompidou Center in Paris.
• Miyake has won the Pratt Institute's New York Award for Creative Design (1980), the International Award of the Council of America Fashion Designers (1984), and Best Collection by a Foreign Designer-Paris (1985), and the Kyoto Prize for lifetime achievement in the arts (2006).
• Miyake's aesthetic is based around the principle of creating a garment from one piece of cloth; the label is also known for its research and development of technical fabrics and processes.
• In 1999 Miyake retired from his namsake label.
