Martin Margiela

• After a stint under Jean-Paul Gaultier, Royal Academy of Fine Arts graduate Martin Margiela founded his eponymous label in 1988.
• The label now produces several lines of clothing and accessories for men and women, with each line designated a number.
• Maison Martin Margiela's work is often highly conceptual and experimental, seeking to express and explore interesting and abstract ideas. Indeed, the standard uniform for a Margiela employee is a white lab coat.
• Great attention is also paid to craftsmanship, one line consists of faithful reproductions of vintage clothes or accessories the Maison admires.
• Margiela himself is known for being incredibly discrete, declining to appear in photographs and answering interview questions via faxes signed "Maison Martin Margiela."
