Amoeba Music

For anyone who doubts for a second the ability of independent music stores to survive against the corporate megastore witness Amoeba. The huge, vibrant record store stocks thousands of new and used CDs and vinyl (including tons of imports), DVDs, posters and more, and they do it all without towing the major label line. The independent store welcomes independent music, carrying lots of small label records, promoting and providing a venue for local, up-and-comming artists and generally stocking and supporting good music even when it does not fall into the pop/rock/rap categories. And yet, in its vastness Amoeba does not seem to have room for: chees-o uniforms, clueless, careless employees and blaring pop music. The original Berkeley location has the most charm, but it is the smallest of the stores (where smallest is still really quite big).
