The eyelash growth cycle

Bear in mind that eating healthy will lead to beautiful eyelashes, but your eyelashes go through a lifecycle too. This means that even with all your healthy eating, you will still regularly lose lashes.

The human body was born was a certain number of follicles, which is why you must take great care of your eyelashes all during your life (check our article about the oils to use for eyelashes) .

It’s not just about the beauty behind them; eyelashes have a purpose – to protect your eyes from debris, dirt, dust and other things.

The upper eyelid has between 90 and 150 eyelashes, whereas the lower eyelid has between 70 and 80. Each eyelash grows to reach 3/8 inches, dies and grows once more, going through three life stages of its growth cycle.

What Are The 3 Life Stages Of Eyelash Growth?

Eyelash growth cycle steps
  • Anagen Phase (Growth Phase) – In this stage, which lasts up to 45 days, the eyelashes are growing. During this phase, they remain in place unless forcibly plucked. You may think that all your eyelashes are in this stage, but just 40 percent of the upper eyelashes and 15 percent of the bottom lashes are in this stage at one time. Every lash grows to a certain length and stops.
  • Catagen Phase (Transitional Phase) – During this stage, the lashes have grown to their length and quit growing. At this point, the hair follicles start shrinking. If it falls out before the catagen phase is complete, then it doesn’t grow back. This second stage can last up to three weeks.
  • Telogen Phase (Resting Phase) – Of all three cycles, this is the longest and can last over 100 days. In this stage, the eyelash falls out for new growth to occur. It can take up to eight weeks for that to happen. Since eyelashes are in various growth cycle phases, you don’t have to be alarmed when you lose several a day.

3 Tips To Take Care of Your Eyelashes.

When it comes to keeping your eyelashes healthy, you should keep these important tips in mind:

  • NEVER go to sleep with the mascara still on. Mascara causes the eyelashes to harden, which then leads to breakage while sleeping.
  • DO NOT use waterproof mascara, as they can dry your lashes out.
  • USE only a gentle eye makeup remover to take off your mascara.
